SMS Consent & Opt-In

Last updated: March 18, 2026

1. Program Name

Pillar Safety Alerts — SMS notifications that share a user's location with their trusted circle contacts during safety-related situations.

2. What Messages Are Sent

Pillar sends SMS messages containing a user's name and a Google Maps link to their location. Messages are only sent in two situations:

Example messages:

Location share: "Sean is sharing their live location with you on Pillar. See where they are: https://maps.google.com/?q=41.3,-72.8"
Check-in timer expired: "Sean didn't check in on time. Their last location: https://maps.google.com/?q=41.3,-72.8"

3. How Consent Is Collected (Call to Action)

Consent is collected through a multi-step process within the Pillar mobile app. Only the app user can add contacts to their trusted circle, and the process requires deliberate action at each step:

1User navigates to Safety Center

From the app's Safety tab, the user taps "Trusted Circle" to manage their safety contacts.

2User taps "Add to Circle"

The user taps the "Add to Circle" button to begin adding a new trusted contact. A form appears requesting the contact's name, phone number, and optional relationship.

3User enters contact details and saves

The user manually types the contact's name and phone number, then taps "Save." By saving, the user confirms they have the contact's consent to receive safety alert SMS messages. The contact's phone number is not auto-populated from the device's address book — the user must manually enter it.

4Messages are sent only on explicit trigger

No messages are sent at the time of adding a contact. SMS messages are only sent when the user later explicitly shares their location or when a check-in timer they set expires without confirmation.

Key points:

4. Message Frequency

Message frequency varies based on the user's use of safety features. Typical usage is 0–5 messages per month per trusted circle contact. Messages are only sent when the user actively triggers them — there are no scheduled, recurring, or automated marketing messages.

5. Message and Data Rates

Message and data rates may apply. Contact your wireless carrier for details about your messaging plan.

6. Opt-Out

Trusted circle contacts can stop receiving messages at any time by replying STOP to any message. The app user can also remove contacts from their trusted circle at any time within the app. Other supported opt-out keywords: STOPALL, UNSUBSCRIBE, CANCEL, END, QUIT, OPTOUT, REVOKE.
